Setting Up OpenVPN Client on Windows PC

Download the installer that fit to your PC/notebook OS architecture - 32-bit or 64-bit.

 

 

Install OpenVPN Client

Once downloaded, double click on it to start with the installation,

If your PC enabled Windows UAC (User Access Control), you will be asked whether to allow OpenVPN installation or not. Click Yes.

  

 

You will be given 2 options, just pick either one only:

  • Install Now or

  • Customize

For most situation, Install Now is preferred way.

However, if you want to have more control on where to install or custom component to be installed, then click on Customize.

 

NOTE: For Customize installation only.

Ensure TAP-Windows network adapter driver is selected or else your OpenVPN client will not be able connect to VPN server.

 

You may be asked for install confirmation WinTUN and TAP-Windows network adapters driver.

Tick Always trust software from ... box and click Install button.

 

 

Installation may take awhile. Once completed, click on Close button to close installation dialog box.

 

You may check and verify there are 2 new network adapters OpenVPN WinTUN and OpenVPN TAP-Windows6.

  • Press Win + R to open the Run command dialog box.
  • Type ncpa.cpl and press Enter to open the Network Connections tool.

 

 

In Network Connections, you should see there are 2 new network adapters.

 

Download .ovpn configuration file

Once OpenVPN client is installed, download the .ovpn configuration file from respective VPN server.

You may find download link URL stated in the activation form email you'd received.

Visit the download link URL and look for file name ended with .ovpn. Right-click on the file and select Save Link As option.

You may rename the file to any name but ensure to save the file with extension .ovpn, not as .txt.

 

Save or copy the file into OpenVPN config directory.

For 32-bit Windows OS - C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config\

For 64-bit Windows OS - C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\

 

Connect to OpenVPN server

OpenVPN GUI will automatically dock in taskbar.

Right-click on OpenVPN GUI, select your OpenVPN profile server then click Connect.

 

You will be asked to enter your VPN Username and Password. You may tick on Save password box if want OpenVPN to always remember your VPN account's password.

 

You are now connected. Successful ARP Flush on interface .... message indicate your OpenVPN session is connected.

 

And your OpenVPN GUI will turn to green, indicate a VPN currently in session.

To end your VPN session, simply click on Disconnect.

 

Troubleshooting

In-case of a connection failure, you may review its log. The log will give you and us some hint why the connection unsuccessful.

Save the log in a text file and send it to us via ticketing for further inspection.
